The Role of Cooperative Learning Strategies in Improving Students' Achievement in Science

This paper critically examined the relevant literature on three types of cooperative learning strategies, their peculiarities and empirical evidences vis-a-vis their role in improving Secondary School students' achievement in Science. Students find it difficult to understand the basic scientific concepts, hence a student that is not well grounded in science and technology at the basic level, will not show interest in offering core science and technology subjects. In order to achieve the objectives of Science and Technology Education, the cooperative mode of teaching strategies have been recommended. Out of many cooperative learning strategies, this paper focuses on: Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD); Jigsaw Technique (JT) and Team Assisted Individualization (TAI). The paper recommended, among others, that Science teachers should be provided with training for their continuing professional development on the effective use of cooperative learning strategies for instruction.
