The Need for Teaching Islamic Economic System at Secondary School Level in Nigeria for Sustainable Development

Abstract

The teaching of Islamic Economic System at secondary level is seriously needed on the account that the students at secondary school would be conscious of the fact that wealth belongs to Allah and He gives it to whoever He wants as an agent only. It will educate them to have useful living, higher education and provide them with sound thinking and appreciation of the danger attached to Capitalist and Socialist Economic Orders, that lack moral concern for others and failed to provide welfare, peace of mind and good living to humanity in general. This is so because those systems lack spiritual guidance to man and only encourage pursue of individual wealth or state wealth through usury and interest (Riba). Monopoly, exploitation, fraud, hoarding are also encouraged in capitalism, while Islamic Economic System condemns all these and provide alternative balanced monetary system which takes care of both spiritual and materials life of Muslims. These can be seen in the collection and distribution of Zakat, charity (Sadaqa) (Waqf) endowment fund, Wasiyya (will) and (Mirath) inheritance. For these reasons, the system need to be taught to future leaders.
